What does home insurance cover?

Understand the main parts of a homeowners policy before your conversation.

Your home and other structures

Dwelling coverage addresses damage to the home from covered causes of loss. Other-structures coverage may apply to a detached garage or shed. Check the limits and exclusions.

Your belongings

Personal-property coverage may help replace belongings after a covered loss. Certain items can have special limits. An inventory helps you discuss what you own and what protection you need.

Liability and additional living expenses

Liability coverage may apply to certain injury or property-damage claims. Additional-living-expense coverage may help with extra costs if a covered loss makes your home uninhabitable. Conditions and limits apply.

What a standard policy may exclude

Flood damage is generally excluded from a standard homeowners policy. Maintenance and wear are also different from a covered sudden loss. Review the actual policy and ask about separate coverage or endorsements.

Rebuilding value is different from sale price

A home’s sale price includes factors that do not necessarily reflect rebuilding costs. Discuss an appropriate rebuilding estimate and what happens if costs exceed your dwelling limit.
